Take Codex CLI Anywhere with Telegram
OpenAI's Codex CLI is a powerful terminal-based AI coding agent. It writes code, edits files, and executes commands. But like all CLI agents, it needs human input — approvals, clarifications, and direction. Remocode's Telegram integration lets you provide that input from your phone, turning any Codex CLI session into a remotely accessible coding agent.
Quick Setup
Prerequisites
- ●Remocode installed from [dl.remocode.org](https://dl.remocode.org/releases/Remocode-latest.dmg)
- ●Telegram account linked in Remocode settings
- ●OpenAI Codex CLI installed and configured
Launch and Connect
- ●Open Remocode and create your pane layout with Cmd+D or Cmd+Shift+W
- ●Name each pane descriptively — "codex-backend", "codex-frontend"
- ●Launch Codex CLI in each pane
- ●Remocode auto-detects Codex and activates agent features
That is it. Your Codex sessions are now accessible from Telegram.
Via Mode: Full Remote Control
The via command opens a bidirectional stream between your Telegram chat and a Codex CLI pane:
via codex-backendYou see Codex's output in real time. Your messages go directly to the terminal. When Codex asks for permission to modify a file, you approve or reject from your phone.
Menu Navigation
When Codex presents numbered options, type the number in Telegram or tap the inline button. Remocode translates your selection into the correct terminal input, handling arrow-key navigation automatically.
Exiting Via Mode
Send !exit or release via to return to normal bot interaction.
Quick Commands Without Via Mode
Not every interaction requires a full via session. Remocode provides quick commands for common tasks:
Peek at Output
peek codex-backendSee the latest terminal output without entering via mode. Useful for checking if Codex is still working, waiting for input, or finished.
Check All Panes
statusA dashboard showing every pane's state. See which Codex instances are active, which are waiting for input, and which have completed their tasks.
Quick Reply
reply codex-backend approveSend a one-off response to a pane. No need to enter via mode for a single approval.
Review History
audit codex-backendSee what Codex has done in this session — files created, commands run, and errors encountered.
Autonomous Operation with AI Supervisor
The Problem with Manual Approval
Codex CLI frequently pauses for approval. Every file edit, every command execution, every ambiguous decision — Codex waits. If you are away from your phone for 30 minutes, Codex has been idle for 30 minutes.
The AI Supervisor Solution
Enable the AI Supervisor on any pane running Codex. It scans the terminal every two seconds and makes decisions based on your project brief:
- ●Approve safe operations like creating test files or updating documentation
- ●Reject risky actions like deleting directories or modifying config files
- ●Answer questions about implementation preferences using your documented guidelines
- ●Escalate complex decisions to you via Telegram
Writing a Good Project Brief
The supervisor is only as good as your brief. Include:
- ●What the project does and its tech stack
- ●Which files or directories are safe to modify
- ●Which operations should always be escalated
- ●Coding conventions and preferences
Auto-Yes for Simple Prompts
For straightforward yes/no confirmations, Auto-Yes handles them at zero cost. No AI calls, no token usage. Toggle it on the pane title bar.
Error Monitoring in the Background
While Codex works and the supervisor manages approvals, Remocode's error monitoring watches for problems. Over 30 regex patterns detect build failures, test errors, runtime exceptions, and more. When an error appears, you can configure Telegram alerts to notify you immediately.
This monitoring runs at zero AI cost — it is pure pattern matching that operates silently in the background.
A Day with Remote Codex
8:00 AM: Open Remocode, create a four-pane workspace. Launch Codex in three panes with specific tasks. Enable the supervisor on all three. The fourth pane runs your dev server.
8:15 AM: Leave for your commute. Codex is working across three tasks with the supervisor handling routine approvals.
8:45 AM: Check your phone on the train. Status shows two panes are progressing well. One pane has an escalation — Codex wants to refactor the database schema. You review the proposed change in via mode and approve it.
9:30 AM: Arrive at the office. Peek at all three panes. Two tasks are complete. The third is 90% done. Enter via mode to review final changes and approve the last few edits.
Total idle time for Codex: near zero. Without Remocode, all three sessions would have stalled at their first prompt.
