How to Configure Your Groq API Key in Remocode
Groq is known for one thing above all else: speed. Their custom LPU (Language Processing Unit) hardware delivers inference speeds that are dramatically faster than traditional GPU-based providers. If you value rapid-fire interactions with your AI assistant, Groq is worth configuring.
Step 1: Create a Groq Account
- ●Visit [console.groq.com](https://console.groq.com)
- ●Sign up with your email or Google account
- ●Verify your email if prompted
Groq offers a free tier with generous rate limits, making it accessible for individual developers.
Step 2: Generate an API Key
- ●In the Groq Console, navigate to API Keys
- ●Click Create API Key
- ●Name your key (e.g., "Remocode")
- ●Copy the key:
gsk_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxAs with other providers, the key is shown only once at creation time. Store it securely.
Step 3: Add the Key to Remocode
- ●Press `⌘⇧A` to open the AI panel
- ●Click ⚙ Settings
- ●Go to the Provider tab
- ●Select Groq as the provider
- ●Paste your API key
- ●Choose your default model
- ●Click Save
Available Models
Remocode supports three models through Groq:
#### Llama 3.3 70B
- ●Parameters: 70 billion
- ●Strengths: strong reasoning, code generation, multi-step problem solving
- ●Speed on Groq: extremely fast for a model this size
- ●Best for: developers who want top-quality responses with minimal latency
#### Llama 3.1 8B
- ●Parameters: 8 billion
- ●Strengths: lightweight, responsive, handles simple tasks well
- ●Speed on Groq: nearly instant responses
- ●Best for: quick completions, simple questions, command suggestions
#### Mixtral 8x7B
- ●Parameters: 46.7 billion active (mixture of experts)
- ●Strengths: efficient architecture, strong at code and reasoning
- ●Speed on Groq: very fast
- ●Best for: a balance between the 70B and 8B options
When to Choose Groq
Groq is the ideal provider when:
- ●Speed is your priority — Groq's LPU hardware delivers tokens faster than any GPU-based alternative
- ●You want open-source models — all Groq models are open-weight
- ●You need rapid iteration — the low latency makes back-and-forth conversations feel instantaneous
- ●You are prototyping — quick responses help you explore ideas faster
Groq is less ideal when:
- ●You need the absolute highest quality (Claude Opus 4.6 or GPT-5.4 may be better)
- ●You need very large context windows
- ●You are working on complex multi-file refactoring tasks
Verifying the Connection
- ●Open the AI panel (`⌘⇧A`)
- ●Type:
Write a fizzbuzz function in TypeScript - ●You should see a response in under a second — that is the Groq speed advantage
Troubleshooting
"Invalid API key" error:
- ●Verify the key starts with
gsk_ - ●Check for whitespace around the pasted key
- ●Confirm the key is active in the Groq Console
"Rate limit reached" error:
- ●Groq's free tier has request-per-minute limits
- ●Wait 60 seconds and try again
- ●Consider upgrading for higher rate limits
Slow responses (unusual for Groq):
- ●Check your internet connection
- ●Groq servers may be experiencing load — retry after a moment
Recommended Configuration
Start with Llama 3.3 70B as your default Groq model. It provides the best reasoning capabilities while still being remarkably fast on Groq's hardware. Switch to Llama 3.1 8B when you need near-instant responses for simple tasks.
Groq turns AI-assisted coding into a real-time conversation. The near-zero latency fundamentally changes how you interact with your coding assistant — instead of waiting for responses, you can think and iterate at natural speed.
